A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
