Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become ravenous," described a patient.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
